Winterizing your Quedgeley home

Although it is hard to imagine after the record breaking temperatures that we have had in Quedgeley this week but winter is on its way.
-
Always have a spade and an emergency kit handy in the winter.
So now is the best time to get everything sorted for the cold weather as your home takes a lot more maitnence in the winter months.
Here are some of the most important things to check before the cold kicks in:
- Inspect your roof for loose or broken tiles.
- Check and clear your gutters
- Store away any summer garden furniture or equipment
- Make sure that you have a good shovel handy in case of snow
- Insulate any exposed water pipes
- Trim any overhanging tree branches that could fall down in high winds
"Winter is obviously our busiest time however some of the jobs that we get called out to are avoidable if you keep up the maintenence on your house.
The most important tip I can give you is to insulate any exposed water pipes as these can freeze in extremely cold weather and cause a major problem.
Also to always check that your boiler is in good working condition as you don't have your heating on in the summer and might not realise there is a problem until it is freezing cold and too late."
Another good idea for the winter is to put together an emergency kit with such things in a a torch, candles, tape, spare fuses, batteries, some tools and some first aid equipment.
This could be handy in a power cut, flooding, snow or another emergency.
Being prepared could save you a lot of time and money this winter.

I have heard rumours that we are expecting early snow as well. Plymouth had 7 road gritters on standby last weekend (on the record breaking hottest weekend in October I may add) as they didn't want to be caught out by the snow again. So unfortunately I do think that snow may be on its way. Although I did read that in The Sun so how much of that is fact is also debatable.

ReportI keep hearing rumours of early snow this year as well, tho whether they are based in fact are a different matter

ReportGood thinking about the anti-freeze Alan! Whenever there is a slight frost there isn't a single bottle of anti-freeze to be had in all of Quedgeley. I have stocked up now because there is nothing worse than having to scrape your car on a frosty morning. Also good idea Emma about the emergency kit. You would be surprised how often you could need that - power cuts, flooding and snow are all things we could experience this winter.

ReportYes and it's also a lot nicer to do your home maintenance now when it's not too cold. Especially all the garden stuff. Unfortunately now the sunny weather seems to have gone but at least for now it's still dry!!

ReportGood thinking Emma, especially as this good weather will lull us into a false sense of security. Another good point is that now is a good time to put some anti freeze in your car as well as buying some de-icer. The shops never have any when we have a frost.
