OPINIONS are mixed in Gloucester about whether former RBS boss, Fred Goodwin should have had his knighthood taken away.

John Price 61, a retired banker, from Ashleworth said: "I think it's all a political move. I think he definitely made a mess at the Royal Bank of Scotland but they shouldn't have given an honour one day and take it away the next because he made a bad job of it. If I was asked to vote I wouldn't have voted for it to be taken off him."

But Sheila Stevens 64, a cleaner from Churchdown welcomed the move, adding: "I'm glad I don't think he should. I think they did the right thing in stripping it from him after we had to bail the bank out."

Stephen Stafford, 23, unemployed, from Quedgeley agreed.

He said: "I think the Queen did the right thing. If people do wrong they should be stripped of the honour." I

But Luke Bopoto, 45, unemployed from Quedgeley did not approve of the move. He said: "The Queen should not have taken the knighthood from him. He did some good to deserve it in the first place."

Keith Burrows, 57, a Gloucester a business owner said: "He shouldn't have got the knighthood and the Queen did the right thing to rescind it."

Ingrid White, 64, from Gloucester, a retired office worker agreed, she added: "I support what the Queen did. He shouldn't have had it in the first place. He was responsible for the collapse of the bank and it's just not right."

Anybody remember who we hated before the bankers?

Now you see why the politicians are being so active about this.

I suggest we compile a list of all MPs that stole money from us even if they didn't serve time and remove any honours still remaining.

I would rather see his pension reduced to something like 30k a year. he is 51 years old for goodness sake. The lazy so and so should be forced to find work if he wants more money to support his grand lifestyle. The rest of us are having to work until we are 66, and probably later as time goes by. As it is he has a pension for more than £342,000 a year, reduced from £703,000 apparently. Good reward for bringing a bank to its knees .... not.

So we put "Fred the Shred" in the public pillory as we remove his knighthood because he hasn't done anything criminal; But what about Lord Taylor and Lord Hanningfield (convicted of expenses fraud under the Theft Acts) Lord Archer (Perjury and other offences) Lord Watson of Invergowrie (fireraising) who continue to sit in the House of Lords. Why can't this honours committee remove their peerages?

We are repeatedly told that top bankers won't take the jobs unless they get big pay and big bonuses and benefits, so why did he get an honour for 'services to banking' in the first place?
