Fishing on Friday: Rules, red devils and a battery to help charity

THE topic of conversation this week with anglers is the American crayfish.

These red devils are making life in our rivers for fish very difficult. If you see any, please report where and when to the Environment Agency.

I have been looking at the British Waterways Board and how the management board will work. So far, it's all about boaters. When will the angling fraternity wake up? Once again they are overtaken by boaters, stop complaining and take some action. How many times have you heard officers say "I don't like him or that", and do nothing?

I have been asked about the rules on Zander in the canal – why do they have to be killed? Well, I cannot find any rules on that issue in the Waterways Fishing rules.

The Quedgeley and District Angling Club have announced that this year's charity match will be for a local children's charity. If you are interested, contact me on email.

News from Ireland is that worms have been forbidden in fishing there. Just what is going on? I have had plenty of good catches in the past on worms – daft I call it.

I have been asked to remind members of the Quedgeley Angling Club their next meeting is on Thursday, February 9, at 7.30pm.

All fishing well at Stone End Farm, Harescombe, Matson, Tirley Court, Burley Fields, and Elton Farm. One of the fishing charities that I am interested in use a Samsung camcorder to help disabled people. But they can't get a battery. Can you help? The battery pack is NC-120P.

I hear that a good roach was taken on the canal at the old oil tanker bay (1-13-0). Not bad, but who was the angler?

Round six of the Gloucester Angling Centre took place on Sunday on the canal Hempstead to Netheridge pegs 44 to 64.

First Andy Freeman 22-10-0 peg 45, Second Jerry Wigget 11-12-0 peg 62, Third Dale Malpass peg 41 11-2-0.

The centre will sponsor the Preston Gloucester Canal Championships on March 28. Tickets are £20 available from the shop.

Disabled anglers don't forget July 1 – the National at South Cerney.

To put your club results in the column, email me at j.dewsnip@blueyonder.co.uk.

"Releasing any alien animal into the wild can have a devastating effect on other wildlife and on the eco-system in general. The release of thousands of mink by the anti-fur activists has never been forgotten.
Then of course we have the issue with the dead and eaten deer around Stroud, probably caused by someone releasing a Lynx or Bobcat :)"

Factually not true is it Dave_Kemp, er Andrew_Powell? American Mink were brought in by the rich, the wealthy landowners, who saught riches. Many escaped during those early days, it was not until recent that the ant-fur, anti-anything brigade started reeasing them through their gorilla warfare tactics. Mink being an appex creature, wild, blood thursty and smart enough to evolve into its notable namesake. Mink being larger and top predator ran wild through the country, making our weasles, stoats, seem tame. The issue with the Lynx or Bobcat which is smaller, sorry but the DNA came back as not felid but vulpine, your lynx stories are dead..but don't get me wrong, as there are many smaller cats out there, such as leopard cats. But then again you seem to be an expert on everything within the TiG website, you have an opinion for everything, you lambast others and put scorn on them, you get red negative marks and so many people on these threads post cooments that sport you as an ego-self who enjoys it. Not everyone is releasing American Crayfish, many come in on boats, many come in from boxes landed. Most anglers enjoy their hobby and sport, most have a good ethical response to their interests and many see the bigger picture. Not all anglers are bad and not all have alterior motives, unlike you who put scorn on everyone. If anglers and fisherman are so bad, then how come you have Arran's No Fish Zone, the first of it kind, or where anglers help return fish, or even help with the reintroduction of species such as the Powan. Yes I agree that releasing an alien species can cause major conflict, one only has to look at the issues of mice, rats, rabbits, knotweed etc, but then again we can say the same for the white man by removing the native people of America, Australia, and so on...

As with all walks of like there are a few idiots that ruin it for the rest and leave line, litter etc and introduce non-native species (often for live-bait). However, any angler worth his salt knows you shouldn't release alien species into any waters. Anglers are by and large act as an early warning system for pollution and other eco-hazards and help keep the habitat clean.

Anglers release non-native species into UK waters. Non-native species destroy native fish stocks. Anglers whinge about low native fish stocks in UK waters.
